FINAL PREVIEW:
Hello, Ben here again – today we’ll be going through how to create a Vancouver Olympics poster. I was inspired to do this tut after recreating the Olympic logo , I thought with a bit of extra imagery this could make a good tut.
The core theme here is ice and winter combined with movement. The ice skaters are static to begin with and the blur gives the illusion of movement.
There is a free psd to download at the end of the tutorial.
As always thanks to ~JavierZhX for providing the brushes and to ZeroOne for the ice skating image
Step 1
Open up a new document in Photoshop and place this image of these downhill skaters.
Duplicate this layer with Ctrl + J
Step 3
Convert it to a smart object; this is so we can adjust the filter as we go, commonly known as a non destructive way of working.
Step 4
Go to filter blur radial blur, set the amount to 100, Blur method to zoom and quality to best . Then get the blur centre to where the skaters are in the image.
Step 5
We’ll now put this layers blend mode to lighten, this lets the light through the some areas, it has the same effect as softening the image.
Step 6
Now we need to duplicate this layer and add a layer mask. So press ctrl + J and then on this new layer hit the circle in a square at the bottom of the layers palette.
Step7
With a soft medium sized brush set to black, brush over where the skaters are, so they are un blurred a little.
Step8
Next, download these brushes and brush a subtle border effect around the outside edge. Lower the opacity until they blend in more.
Step 9
Now for the Olympic circles, draw out a circle and fill with this light blue colour 758eb5. The go to select, modify contract and enter 4 pixels. Then delete the centre so you are left with a hollow circle.
Step 10
To make the rest of the logo, we’ll just copy the first circle and change the colors.Holding alt with the move tool selected move the blue circle to the left and down. This will make a copy in a new layer.
Step 11
Double click the layer to bring up the Layer styles and choose color overlay and use this yellow ffa615.
Step 12
Now do as we did in step 10 and copy the yellow circle, the change the layers style to black. Position the circle as shown in the image.
Step 13
As you can see in the following image I used the yellow circle so that it’s in line. Again use shift when you drag the circle, remember use the alt key to copy and that you’re on the move tool. Then change the colour to this green colour 52a231
Step 14
Now move and copy the black circle holding shift to get it in line just as we did before. Then change the layer style to this red as we did previously.
Step 15
Merge the circle layers together and move them into the centre.
Step 16
Finally type out ‘ Vancouver 2010 ‘ using Lucida Sans Unicode set to strong , and place this under the Olympic circles.
